A course for beginner/intermediate levels to understand the key components in woodland habitats used to assess good condition and degrading condition. We will also look at key tree and ground flora species, including ancient woodland indicators.
This course is aimed at ecologists and botanists completing baseline walkover surveys and condition assessments in woodlands to inform Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and Biodiversity Net Gain.

Grassland Condition Assessment - Chalk Grassland Course - 18th June

A course for beginner/intermediate levels to understand the key components in a chalk grassland habitat used to assess good condition and degrading condition. A range of species typical of the habitat will be taught along with discussing good and degrading indicator species.
This course is aimed at ecologists and botanists completing baseline walkover surveys and condition assessments in chalk grasslands for Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and Biodiversity Net Gain.

A course for beginner levels to learn a minimum of 15 grasses, sedges and rushes along with some wildflowers.
Learning the more common species found in neutral and chalk grasslands and discussions on key indicators for good and degrading conditions in grassland swards.
Tips for improving botanical skills and suggested books and resources will also be covered.
This course is aimed at ecologists and botanists completing baseline walkover surveys and condition assessments (e.g. to inform Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and Biodiversity Net Gain)in a range of habitats likely to contain the more prevalent common grassland species.

All available vegetation zones will be discussed from the strandline to the stable/mature shingle and scrub zones. A number of key coastal species will be taught along with their adaptations and placements within each vegetated shingle community or zone.

Dust Off The Cobwebs - Early Season Plant ID Course - 15th April

A course for beginner/intermediate levels to look at a neutral grassland, woodland and ponds to refresh and extend botanical knowledge at the start of the main botanical survey season.
This course is aimed at ecologists and botanists completing baseline walkover surveys. The format of the day will be completing a baseline walkover survey in three different habitat types. Whilst not essential, a little prior knowledge of some common plant species would be useful along with some prior experience of baseline walkover surveys. However, the intention is to refresh and expand existing knowledge along with teaching some new species.

By the end of this practical one-day botanical walkover survey course, participants will be able to:
Conduct structured baseline walkover surveys across three habitat types, applying systematic observation techniques to identify and record key species in field conditions.
Refresh and deepen recognition of common grassland, woodland and pond species
Species will include a mixture of grasses, some sedges and rushes, wildflowers, wetland plants and tree identification. As this course falls early in the season, looking at vegetative features of common species will also be covered – where applicable.
